KAHUKU -- The BYU women’s golf team finished the second round of the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational Wednesday two strokes out of second place with three golfers in the top 10.
Sophomre Kelsey Vines continued her strong showing at the Arnold Palmer Golf Course in Kahuku, Hawaii with a second round 79, moving her into a tie with teammate Maggie Yuan for eighth place. Yuan, a junior, birdied her final hole to bring her even with Vines and within six strokes of the overall leader.
Windy conditions were an obstacle for all golfers and contributed to the Cougars' slip in position.
"We slipped a little bit today, but we are confident we can bounce back," said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. "The wind was something we didn't handle very well, but we played pretty well."
Starting the day tied for 17th place, sophomore Annika Afoa shot a 5-over 77 to move up one spot to 16th overall. Teammate and fellow sophomore Amanda Keith is right behind Afoa, shooting a second-round 79 to move into a tie for 17th place.
Senior Jade Bollinger moved into a tie for 19th place after an 81 in round two. Bollinger started the day tied for ninth after going two over on day one.
Golfing independently for the Cougars, seniors Emily Copier and Sara Romero shot rounds of 85 and 88 respectively in round two.
The final round of action is set for Thursday with shotgun starts beginning at 8 a.m. HST.
"Even though we fell a little today we are still within striking distance," Roberts said. "I am confident that we can come out tomorrow and put four good scores up to make a run at it."
