NDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Committee has announced that the BYU women's golf team will compete in the NCAA Division I West Regional May 5-7 in Auburn, Washington.

"This was one of our goals as a team," said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. "We are very excited to be in a regional and hope to advance to nationals."

The West Regional and three other regional tournaments will be conducted May 5-7 to determine the NCAA championship field. The Cougars will be competing in a regional tournament for the first time since 2008, when they finished 17th at the West Regional in Lincoln, Calif.

Sophomore Kelsey Vines leads the Cougars with five top-10 finishes in 2011, including an individual championship at the UNLV Spring Invitational in March.

"We just need to focus on consistency," Roberts said. "We will be playing everyday and if we can be consistent, we will be in good shape."

Joining the Cougars in NCAA Regional competitions are conference opponents, TCU, San Diego State, New Mexico and UNLV.

A total of 378 participants have been selected for regional competition. Of these golfers, 126 will advance to the championships finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional.

The championships finals will be held May 18-21 at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas and will be hosted by Texas A&M in College Station.
