PROVO, Utah – The BYU women’s golf team has announced two standout recruits from Utah and Mexico that will be joining the team this upcoming year.

Lea Garner was the No. 1 ranked player in the state of Utah for the class of 2012. She was a Regional medalist from 2009-11 while also garnering First team all-state each of those years as well. Along with her high school accolades, Garner was selected to the Junior Americas Cup team in 2010 and 2011.

"We are very excited with the 2012 signees,"BYU coach Carrie Roberts said. "Lea is the best player in the state of Utah for 2012 and it is always our goal to land the best players from the state and her commitment accomplishes that goal.  She has been a very decorated player in Utah for her first three years of high school and has won a lot of tournaments including the Mary baker open last summer by eight shots."

Coach Roberts has also continued the BYU tradition of recruiting outside the United States with the signing of Valeria Macias of Guadalajara, Mexico. Valeria is one of the top-five ranked junior golfers in Mexico and has represented her country at various team events. She has also won several tournaments in Mexico.

"Valeria is one of the best players in Mexico for 2012 and overall," Roberts said. "She won three straight tournaments over the summer after she verbally committed and we expect her to continue that play at BYU. Most of all, both are wonderful quality individuals and understand what it means to be a BYU student-athlete. We expect both to contribute immediately and continue the elevation of our program."
