DOVE CANYON, Calif. – Using a second round, 13-over-par 297, the best round of the tournament for any school, the BYU women’s golf team charged into second place at the Anteater Invitational on Monday.
“The girls played great today,” said BYU coach Carrie Roberts. “It was nice to see them back up a solid first round.”
For the first time this season, the Cougars had four golfers ranked in the top 20 going into the final round of a tournament.
Sophomore Annika Afoa led the way for the team in day one after shooting rounds of 3-over-par and 2-over-par en route to a sixth-place spot going into the final round. Right behind her was freshman Lauren Atkinson, who shot the best round of the day for the Cougars, a 1-over-par 71.
Senior Maggie Yuan shot the third best score for BYU and currently sits in 14th place, while Amanda Keith is in 19th after shooting 10-over par for the day.
Washington State University leads all teams after shooting a 28-over-par 596. The Cougars trail WSU by two strokes while Cal State Fullerton is in third, 11 strokes off the pace.
“We just need to come out comfortable and confident tomorrow,” Roberts said. “The girls are working hard and are starting to see results.”
The tournament will conclude tomorrow.
