SAN FRANCISCO – Senior Kathryn LeCheminant led BYU women’s volleyball to a three-set (25-20, 25-19, 25-8) sweep on the road at San Francisco on Thursday to remain atop the West Coast Conference.
“I’m happy for the girls and team,” BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead said. “They played a great match. Give credit to each of the girls. We played strong in every facet.”
LeCheminant had 10 kills on 21 attempts with just two errors to hit a .381 clip, while adding four block assists to lead the team. Sophomore libero Ciara Parker led the team with 17 digs, and sophomore setter Camry Godfrey contributed 38 assists. Junior Tambre Haddock added 12 kills and six digs, while sophomore Alexa Gray contributed 10 kills in the win. Freshman Whitney Young had nine kills from 11 attempts to hit an impressive .818 hitting percentage.
Haddock gave BYU (20-4, 13-1 WCC) its first points of the match from a kill. A bad set by San Francisco (11-12, 7-6 WCC) gave the Cougars a five-point lead at 12-7, which forced a Don timeout. San Francisco continued to battle back, though, coming within three at 16-13 from a trio of kills. BYU maintained its lead to the end of the match, taking it 25-20 from a Don attack error.
The second set opened up 7-4 in favor of the Cougars after two straight San Francisco errors. BYU then had an eight-point lead at 17-9 after another Haddock kill. The Dons cooled off that Cougar stretch by going on a 6-0 run of their own, cutting the BYU lead to two at 17-15. A pair of kills from Gray gave the Cougars set point and a third kill ended the second set with a win at 25-19.
Two kills from Young gave BYU a strong 6-1 start to the third set. A 7-0 run quickly followed to extend the Cougar lead to 10 at 13-3. San Francisco couldn’t find an answer for BYU’s attack as the Cougars took the third and final set 25-8 from another Gray kill.
The Cougars continue conference play on the road by heading to Santa Clara on Saturday to face the Broncos at 1 p.m. PST. The match will be broadcast live by TheW.tv. Links to live stats can be found on the BYU women’s volleyball schedule page.
