PORTLAND, Ore. – Tyler Haws scored a career-high 48 points in a triple overtime 114-110 loss to Portland at the Chiles Center on Thursday.

"The second overtime was probably where we played our best," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "We had a good look at the end of the second overtime, I thought that shot by Ty on the baseline was going in. Then down the stretch they made some huge plays, we missed some free throws and couldn't seal the deal."

Matt Carlino added 25 points, nine assists and seven steals off the bench, while Kyle Collinsworth finished with a double-double, 12 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with four assists. Skyler Halford added 13 points and four rebounds and Nate Austin finished with seven points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Eric Mika recorded a block two minutes into the game that led to a jumper by Halford for the 2-0 start. The Pilots grabbed a 10-5 lead, but was answered by buckets by Haws and Collinsworth, followed by a Carlino steal and the layup in transition to cut the deficit to 12-11 at the 12:55 mark.

Portland regained a six-point lead until Carlino scored the next nine BYU points that included a 3-pointer and another steal for the layup to cut Portland’s lead to 31-30 with 4:51 remaining in the half. Carlino’s backdoor pass to Haws kept the deficit at four and a 3-pointer by Haws to make it a three-point game with 1:21 to go before the half. The Cougars were down 45-40 at the half with Haws and Carlino leading with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Haws began the second half with a layup before Portland scored five straight, which was answered back by a Halford 3-pointer. Five minutes into the half, the Pilots extended their lead to a game-high 11 and 56-45. Haws answered with on an 8-0 run on a jumper followed by back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to three at 56-53.

After Portland pushed its lead back to seven at 52-45, Haws and Carlino recorded blocks on the same possession that led to Carlino’s first of consecutive 3-pointers that made it a one-point game. At the 8:48 mark, Haws’ free throws gave BYU the 63-62 lead. Portland led 80-78 with less than a minute remaining, but Carlino’s deflection to Haws for the layup from Portland’s inbound pass tied it at 80-80 with 32 seconds left and sent it to overtime.

Portland had seven-point lead in overtime with 44 seconds left, but BYU tied it after going on an 8-1 run. Halford connected on a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left followed by a pair of free throws and a three by Haws with 12 seconds remaining to send it into double overtime.

Collinsworth’s layup gave the Cougars a 93-91 lead to start the double overtime. Haws made two trips to the free-throw line and went 4 of 4, followed by a drive to the rim by Collinsworth for the 99-91 lead with 2:40 remaining. Despite BYU’s four-point lead with 47 seconds left, Portland re-tied the game at 103 to send it into triple overtime.

The Pilots held the Cougars scoreless for the first 3:30 minutes in the third overtime until Collinsworth made both free throws to make it a five-point game. Carlino’s drive to the rim cut Portland’s lead 112-109 with 14 seconds left, but BYU couldn’t overcome Portland’s run.

BYU remains on the road to take on Gonzaga on Saturday at 7 p.m. PST. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7/1160 AM.
