GOODYEAR, Ariz. — BYU men's golf struggled in the second round, dropping to 10th place in the Desert Shootout on Friday.
"The beauty of it all is that we have another round to see what we can do," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We have too much experience on the team to be shooting the way we have. Anytime someone struggles like Cole (Ogden) did yesterday and is able to come back and shoot 69, that is very positive. CJ (Lee) has played well considering that it is his first tournament. Our guys need to decide how they are going to play."
The second day of competition finished with BYU in a tie for 10th (+2) with Seattle University. The Cougars shot the same total, 289, in the first two rounds. Kansas took sole possession of first place, with tournament host Denver trailing by three strokes.
Senior Jordan Rodgers remained in the top 20, shooting four-under-par to put himself in a tie for 13th place.
"My speed was off with my putting, so I struggled with that today. Otherwise, my score would've been a little bit better," Rodgers said. "I had back-to-back birdies at the end of the round, which was nice, but I will go get it tomorrow."
Freshman CJ Lee held steady in the second round, getting 73 like he did in the first round. He finished the day in a tie for 43rd (+2). However, junior Tommy Higham dropped to a tie for 54th (+4) after shooting a 76 in round two.
Making up a lot of ground, senior Cole Ogden jumped up to a tie for 60th after shooting a 69 in the second 18 holes, which ties a team-low total with Rodgers' 69 in the first round. Mike Jurca, another senior, shot eight-over-par and is tied for 70th place.
The third and final round will be played on Saturday. Live stats will be available on the BYU men's golf schedule page.
