Fishburn tied for 11th individually, Cougars tied for 15th

PALO ALTO, Calif. – With an 11th place individual finish from Patrick Fishburn, BYU men's golf is tied for 15th place after the first round of The Goodwin, Thursday.

“We had a tough start to the round,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “The guys hung in there after and played pretty good through about 15 holes, but we then posted some big numbers. Fishburn played great today. Tomorrow, I would like to see the team play how they did in the middle of the round. That would help us improve our position.”

Fishburn started the day off on the back nine, birdying holes 12, 13 and 16. He carded a 69, shooting 1 under on the par-70 course, where BYU won its only NCAA championship title in the 1980-81 season.

Spencer Dunaway shot 2 over through Thursday’s round of 18. The freshman birdied six holes on the day. He shot even par on the back nine, and is currently tied for 42nd place.

BYU currently is a six-way tie for 15th place with No. 1 USC, No. 31 SMU, Arizona, Nevada and Fresno State. The Cougars shot 13 over as a team through today’s round. After day one, BYU is in the middle of West Coast Conference foes. The Cougars trail Saint Mary's, Pepperdine, Pacific and LMU, while they sit in front of Santa Clara and San Francisco.
