PROVO, Utah – BYU softball has finalized the 2019 softball schedule, which includes games against three 2018 Women's College World Series teams.
The matchups against 2018 World Series teams include a home date at Gail Miller Field versus the runner up to last year's national title, Washington. The two other games are with Oklahoma, title winners in 2016 and 2017, and UCLA, who fell to the Huskies last year in the World Series.
"We are excited about our 2019 season and the upcoming schedule," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "We have many softball powerhouses and storied programs on our schedule. Every year we try to schedule a strong RPI-building and player-building schedule and this schedule meets those standards. We are excited for the test."
The 2019 schedule includes six tournaments, 15 West Coast Conference games, as well as nine other games to total at a 56-game regular season. BYU will face 10 NCAA Regional teams, four Super Regional teams and three Women’s College World Series teams from last season.
The Cougars will play six teams that finished in the top 15 of the final 2018 rankings in the ESPN.com/USA Softball and USA Today/NFCA Coaches polls including top-five teams UCLA, Oklahoma and Washington.
BYU is slated to face teams in all of the Power Five conferences including four from the Southeastern (SEC), three from both the Big 12 and Pac-12 and one from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and Big Ten. Additionally, the Cougars will face in-state foes Utah Valley, Southern Utah, Utah State and Utah, as well as four Mountain West teams.
The season opens on Feb. 7 as BYU travels to the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in Mexico. The Cougars will then participate in five other tournaments including DeMarini Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, California, the San Diego Classic, the UCLA and Long Beach State Invitational and the Tennessee Invite.
The defending WCC Champions open conference play on April 5 at Loyola Marymount and play their first home game against Pacific in a double-header on April 13. The Cougars will also host Washington on April 17 and Utah in the Deseret First Duel on May 1 to highlight the home non-conference schedule.
