DALLAS – The BYU women’s tennis team completed its first day on Friday at the Metroplex Mania with one doubles win and two singles wins.
“Good first day in Dallas,” BYU women’s tennis head coach Holly Parkinson Hasler said. “The girls are working through some rustiness after a long break. We won a few and learned a lot. Tomorrow is guaranteed to be better as we go into matches focusing on what we can control.”
Madeline Almeida won both her singles and doubles matches on the first day. Her and Polina Malykh took a commanding win in third flight doubles over Eirene Granville and Madi Moore from Northern Arizona University (NAU), 6-2. In fourth flight singles, Almeida defeated Northwestern State University's (NSU) Antonia Blattner 6-3, 6-1. BYU’s third win came in third flight singles when Samantha Smith took the edge against NSU’s Patricia Polanska, winning 1-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Anastasia Abramyan and Kate Cusick battled hard in first flight doubles; however, NAU’s Chiara Tomasetti and Ellie Millard came out on top, 6-3. Smith and Taylah Beckman also took a loss in second flight doubles against NAU’s Cora-Lynn Von Dungern and Emilie Haakansson, 6-3.
In a tight first flight singles match that finished 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, University of Iowa’s Elise van Heuvelen Treadwell took a slim win over Abramyan. Malykh suffered a hard-fought loss against NSU’s Rhea Verma, 7-5, 2-6. Beckman came up short in a tight, three-set match, 5-7, 6-2, 3-6, while battling NSU’s Ela Iwaniuk for the fifth flight win. In the sixth flight, Iowa’s Cloe Ruette defeated Katie Fitt, 6-1, 6-2, while Iowa’s Danielle Bauers took a win over Morgan Hall, 0-6, 6-1, 6-2, in the seventh flight.
The Cougars return to the court for day two of the Metroplex Mania at 12 p.m. CST on Saturday. Live stats and streaming are not available.
