PROVO, Utah – Freshman Josue Dominguez represented the BYU swim team well, taking first in two events at the 2019 Dominican Swimming Federation (FEDONA) National Swimming Championship on Saturday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
“I’m really happy for Josue and that our coach Yolanda was able to be with him during competition,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “He performed really well and is now the national champion in two events in the Dominican Republic.”
The Dominican Republic native competed in the 50-meter breaststroke and the 100-meter breaststroke, taking first in both events with times of 28.60 and 1:02.90, respectively. He also shined in the 50-meter freestyle, touching in second at 23.99.
“Josue injured himself during weightlifting six weeks ago, so we are very proud of his times,” assistant coach Yolanda Bates said. “He was proud to represent his home team and state of Santiago as well as his Cougars back in Utah.”
Dominguez returned to Provo, Utah, to finish his classes at BYU. After the end of the semester, he will return home to the Dominican Republic to train in hopes of receiving the opportunity to compete in the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, from July 26 to August 11.
