PROVO, Utah – BYU head coach Kalani Sitake today announced the addition of South Carolina graduate transfer running back Ty’Son Williams to the football program.
A 6-foot, 219-pound native of Sumter, South Carolina, Williams graduated from the University of South Carolina in December and will have one year of eligibility to play for the Cougars in 2019.
“Ty’Son really wants to be here at BYU,” Sitake said. “He has a strong vision for his career and is excited about the opportunities at BYU to advance his education and career goals. Ty’Son is a well-rounded football player who can carry the ball and catch it out of the backfield. He is super athletic with tons of speed and playmaking ability. We’re excited to welcome him to the university and our football program.”
Williams played two seasons for the Gamecocks of the SEC in 2017-18 after redshirting in 2016. He played in 20 games at South Carolina, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. In 2018, he ran 70 times for 328 yards and four touchdowns. Williams also posted nine receptions for 152 yards. As a redshirt sophomore in 2017, he finished second on the team with 95 carries, 471 yards and one touchdown.
Williams played his freshman season at the University of North Carolina. He appeared in six games, rushing 19 times for 57 yards.
A four-star recruit out of Crestwood High School, Williams ran for 1,058 yards and 14 touchdowns on 194 carries as a senior. He also topped 1,000 yards during his sophomore and junior seasons, hitting 1,608 yards and 16 scores as a junior in 2013.
Williams was a member of the ESPN Top 300 and ranked as the No. 11 running back in the nation out of high school with offers to Wisconsin, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Duke, Michigan, Mississippi State, NC State, North Carolina, South Carolina, Notre Dame and Virginia.
