PROVO, Utah – The BYU women’s soccer team closed out exhibition play with a dominant 4-0 win over Colorado College Saturday night at South Field.
“I think we came out a little nervous with it being an exhibition tonight,” BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “The girls put a lot of pressure on themselves, but we played well and had opportunities, it just didn’t come. I just told them to find Mikayla facing forward because that is where we are most dangerous and the first thing she did in the second half was find Elise who put the ball away.”
The first half saw the majority of the action on the Cougars’ attacking half as they tallied a total of 15 shots compared to the Tigers’ one. Senior Elise Flake led the team with five total attempts as the two teams went into the locker room scoreless at halftime.
BYU took advantage early in the second half when Flake found the back of the net in the 47th minute as she rocketed a shot into the goal to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
The second goal came when freshman SaraJayne Affleck found Flake on a long ball as BYU took a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute.
In the 73rd minute, senior Alyssa Jefferson was awarded a free kick outside the 18-yard box and her kick found its way into the far side of the goal to extend the Cougars lead to 3-0.
BYU’s fourth goal came in the 81st minute as freshman Ellie Maughan sent in a long cross to junior Makaylie Moore who headed the ball to the near post.
The Cougars recorded 27 shots and 13 corner kicks while Colorado College tallied four and one, respectively.
The Cougars travel to Alabama for their first official game of the season on Thursday, Aug. 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CDT and will be available on the SEC Network. Audio broadcasts can be heard on the BYU Sports Network/BYU Cougars app, BYU Radio 107.9 FM and ESPN 960 AM/ESPN 960 app.
