PROVO, Utah – BYU had 14 gymnasts named 2018-2019 Scholastic All-Americans by the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) on Monday.
BYU's 14 total selections tied for No. 12 among 76 schools.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete myst have a 3.5 GPA throughout the season.
"I'm just really proud of all of our girls," gymnastics head coach Guard Young said. "Academic All-American is a big deal and we try to celebrate that. It really shows their hard work, not only in the gym, but also academically."
According to this past year's statistics, the gymnasts earned a combined 3.36 GPA. Guard believes educational success is common among gymnasts.
"Gymnasts are typically great students," Guard said. "In the classroom, they're usually people pleasers because they're used to being judged in all facets of their life."
Among the recipients, two of the team's newest seniors, Briana Pearson and Angel Zhong, claim this award for the third consecutive year. In addition, recent graduates Natasha Trejo and Cheyenne Hill ended their careers on a high note, becoming two-time recipients of the honor. (Complete list posted below)
