Gajardo and Tullis secure place in doubles quarterfinals at So Cal Intercollegiate

LOS ANGELES – Ben Gajardo and Sam Tullis advanced to the doubles quarterfinals after the first day at the Southern California Intercollegiate on Friday.

“The guys fought hard and competed today, which we were proud of,” BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. “We're looking forward to finishing strong tomorrow to close out our fall season.”

Doubles

In the round of 16, Gajardo and Tullis teamed up to defeat Chapman University’s Adrien Rooney and Caleb Wilkins 8-6, securing their place in the quarterfinals.

Jack Barnett and Matheus Ferreira Leite faced the No. 3 seed doubles duo, Ben Goldberg and Connor Rapp of UCLA, but fell 5-8, while David Ball and Vinicius Feijao Nogueira dropped their match 3-8 to the University of Arizona’s Filip Malbasic and Alejandro Reguant-Bicardi.

Singles

Ferreira Leite took on the No. 1 seed, August Holmgren of the University of San Diego, in the round of 32, but came up short, 4-6, 4-6. Despite claiming the second set, Barnett fell to USC’s No. 4 seed, Ryder Jackson in a close three-set match at 3-6, 7-6, 3-6.

Gajardo lost to Jakob Schnaitter of Azusa Pacific University in two sets, 4-6, 1-6. Ball fell to Stanford’s Filip Kolasinski 1-6, 3-6 and Tullis dropped his match to San Diego’s David Norfeldt in a close two-set match, 4-6, 5-7.

Tomorrow, Gajardo and Tullis will compete against Kolasinski and Kento Perera of Stanford in the doubles quarterfinals. Tournament information and draws can be found on the tournament homepage.
