HONOLULU – The BYU women's tennis team snagged two doubles wins and six singles victories to cap off a prolific Hawaii Invitational.
“The forecast was a 100 percent chance of rain the entire day, so we lucked out to get four hours of great tennis in,” BYU head coach Holly Parkinson Hasler said. “Nothing beats leaving on a great note of confidence as we head into our first dual match of the season next week. Today’s success was well deserved.”
No team was able to compete on Friday due to all matches being rained out.
Day one standout Leah Heimuli beat WSU’s Pang Jittakoat 4-6, 7-6, (4) (10-8) in a thrilling three-setter. Heimuli also won her second doubles match with Kate Cusick Truman, beating Hawaii’s Lea and Maddie 6-0. Cusick Truman picked up her own three-set singles victory against Hawaii’s Nikola Dolakova 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Freshman doubles duo Emilee Astle and Emma Jewell beat Northern Arizona’s Roman and Moore 6-3, and both went on to record singles wins as well. Jewell defeated Hawaii’s Lea Romain in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, while Astle beat Northern Arizona’s Emilie Haakansson 6-4,7-6 (1).
The winning streak continued when BYU's Madeline Almeida Wanlass dominated Northern Arizona opponent Ellie Millerd 6-0, 6-0 despite tough court conditions. Almeida Wanlass also competed in a doubles match with freshman Helen Jiao, but they lost to Hawaii’s Bojana and Rebecca 3-6.
Morgan Hall Curtis fought hard in a tiebreaker against WSU’s Maddie Egan, but fell 6-3, 2-6, (2-10). Jiao and Emilee were unable to finish their matches due to rain, but both games ended with the Cougar’s leading in scores.
The Cougars will compete in their first home match of the season in Provo against in-state rival Weber State on Jan. 18, at 11:30 a.m.
