PROVO, Utah — BYU football moved up three spots to No. 18 in The Associated Press Top 25 in the second week of regular-season rankings released Sunday. The Cougars remained in the Amway Coaches Poll but dropped one position to No. 23 after not playing this week.
The No. 18 ranking in the AP poll is the highest the Cougars have been ranked under head coach Kalani Sitake. BYU also matched its best ranking since 2014 when the squad was ranked No. 18 in week six after starting the year 4-0.
Prior to 2020, the last time BYU was ranked in the top 25 was during the 2018 season when the Cougars were ranked as high as No. 20 after starting the season 3-1 with a victories over Arizona on the road and No. 6 Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium.
BYU's win on Labor Day over the Midshipmen featured the most points scored in a season-opener under Sitake and the most points in an opener overall since the Cougars scored 70 against Tulane in 2001.
The Cougars (1-0) will host Troy (1-0) in their next matchup on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 8:15 p.m. MDT in LaVell Edwards Stadium. The Trojans received a vote in the AP poll after their 47-14 road victory at Middle Tennessee on Saturday. The BYU-Troy game on Saturday will be televised nationally on ESPN.
