PROVO, Utah — BYU women's basketball gutted out an impressive 61-56 win over No. 16 Gonzaga at the Marriott Center on Thursday.
“I’m very proud of this team,” BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. “This game has always been like this. Both of us compete so hard. Gonzaga is a very good team and they make it difficult. Tonight I felt that our bench and their bench were pretty equal, but we just made some plays at the end that got us the win. It was a great team effort.”

Thoughts on tonight’s game
I think both Gonzaga and us didn’t play our best, but we respect each other. This game has always been like this. Both of us compete so hard. Gonzaga is a very good team and they make it difficult. Tonight I felt like their bench and our bench were pretty equal, but we made some plays at the end that got us the win. It was a great team effort. We had a hard time with the ball screen. We did better in the second half and didn’t give them as many second and third opportunities. This is how this game has been since I’ve been here. It’s a dog fight and it’s a game you look forward to. It’s a game as a coach and as players you look forward to and I’m really proud of them. Paisley had a big-time basket in the clutch, and it was awesome.
On the team’s success at home
We talked at the first of the year, and to really win a championship, you have to win all your games at home. I told the team it’s a big challenge and the last team to win all their games at home ended up winning the conference championship. Every time we play, right before they go on the court, I say, “We don’t lose at home,” and I think they believe it. I think they believe if they come out and play with the energy they need to, we’re a hard team to beat.

On the basket that put BYU up by three
There were still 44 seconds left in the game and they wanted us to run the clock just a bit. We got set in our play, I went and drove and they kind of stopped me. And then I realized the shot clock was still winding down, so I needed to attack. I went up with a little left-handed floater, and luckily it went in. That was so much fun.
BYU guard Shaylee Gonzales
On the impact the buzzer-beating three had heading into the fourth quarter
It just brought tons of energy. We had a couple of those shots when the shot clock goes down, and it just brings the energy to our team that we need and gets in our head that we have control over this game and it just gets us so hyped. It felt so good to hit that shot. My team came around, and I know they have my back, and they support me. We just went crazy, and it brought us all together.
On how big this win is for the team going forward
This win is huge for us. After we played Gonzaga the first time, we told ourselves that we don’t lose at home and we were going to beat Gonzaga at home. We really locked down because we wanted to fight and win this game. We knew it was super important for us if we wanted to go to the NCAA Tournament and to potentially win the WCC Tournament. I’m super proud of my team and how we came together. Tonight was a team effort and we looked so good together—working the ball around, everyone hitting their shots, fighting for each other, playing tough defense. We played a great game tonight.
