PROVO, Utah — BYU baseball fell to San Diego 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Miller Park, giving the Toreros a 2-1 series victory.
BYU (21-16 7-8) scored three runs on 14 hits, while the San Diego (25-13,11-7) had four runs on nine. Eight different Cougars had hits in the game including Collin Reuter who went 3-4 with an RBI. Brock Watkins and Austin Deming both had two hits and each drove in a run.
After a scoreless first inning, San Diego put two runs on the board in the top of the second. BYU answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning to cut the USD lead to 2-1 through two. Jacob Wilk doubled to lead off the inning and Deming singled to center to score Wilk.
San Diego pushed its lead to 4-2 in the fourth with a two-out home run that scored two runs.
BYU scored another run in the bottom of the sixth, bringing the score to 4-2. Ryan Sepede and Hayden Leatham had back-to-back singles and Reuter brought Sepede home with a two-out single of his own to right field.
The Toreros had their first inning without a hit in the top of the seventh, and BYU took advantage on a Watkins home run to cut the score to 4-3.
After a scoreless eighth and ninth innings for San Diego, BYU had a change to tie or win the game in the top of the ninth. Singles by Watkins and Mitch McIntyre put the tying run on third and the winning run at first, but a 4-6-3 double play ended the game.
