PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s tennis defeated San Francisco 4-3 in a match that went down to the wire, breaking the Cougars' three-match losing streak.
It all came down to the final match between BYU's Kara Lin and USF's Mya Bui. Bui took the early lead, winning a close first set 7-5, before Lin won set two 6-4, sending the match to its third and deciding set. After getting down 4-2, Lin came back to close out a 7-6 win, defeating Bui and giving BYU the win in the nailbiter of a match.
BYU and USF fought hard in the doubles matches, BYU senior Anastasia Abramyan and freshman Bobo Huang got a quick victory over Chiho Mushika and Bui, defeating them 6-1. BYU junior Emilee Astle and Lin dropped their match 6-4, splitting the first two doubles matches, before the Dons came out on top with the point in the 6-4 victory over senior Leah Heimuli and junior Helen Jiao.
USF took the first singles point as Mushika defeated Abramyan in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. BYU did not let the lead sit for long as Astle won her match 6-4, 6-1 over Rita Colyer, keeping the lead through both sets. The Dons picked up their third point as Caragh Courtney defeated freshman Madison Smith 6-4, 6-4. The Cougars did not allow the lead to hold as they quickly evened the score 3-3, with Huang coming back from a three-game deficit in her final set to win 6-3, 7-6. Heimuli recorded the third BYU point after a tight first set, beating Maria Martinez Vaquero 7-6, 6-4.
Lin rounded out the win with a 5-7, 64, 7-6 victory over Bui.
The Cougars are at home again for another West Coast Conference match this weekend, taking on Santa Clara Saturday at 12 p.m. MDT.
