"We are excited for the spring 2023 season to begin," Coach Porter said. "The players are working hard and look forward to having Cougar fans both at home and away cheering them on. We have an excellent schedule and are ready to play. Go Cougs."
The season and home opener will be Friday, Jan. 20 against Idaho State. All 10 of the team’s home matches will begin at 11:00 a.m. MT, either on BYU’s indoor or outdoor courts located directly south of the Smith Fieldhouse.
Schedule Notes
Final WCC Campaign
The Cougars are entering their 11th and final WCC season, with the team holding an all-time record of 52-34 in WCC play. That history also includes top-three finishes in six of the nine completed seasons and 31 All-Conference honors, two of which are held by current players Jack Barnett and Wally Thayne.
BYU will play each WCC school once, beginning with Saint Mary's at home on Saturday, Feb. 18. Senior day and the final match of the year will be in Provo on Friday, April 21 versus Pacific.
Power Five Preview
BYU will be in Eugene, Oregon on March 17-18 for two matches, the first of which will be against Texas Tech. The Cougars and Red Raiders will become conference foes next season, with Texas Tech also one of nine teams on the schedule that finished last year ranked in the Top 75 of the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
The second match that weekend against host-school Oregon is one of three Pac-12 matchups for BYU. The Cougars will also visit Utah on Saturday, March 11 and host Stanford on Thursday, March 30.
In-State Foes
The match against Utah will be the third and final in-state contest for the Cougars this season. The team will also face Utah State in Logan on Saturday, Feb. 11 before hosting Weber State on Friday, Feb. 17. The three matchups will see BYU play every Division I program in the state this year, with the Cougars 172-70 all-time against the three schools.
Home Court Advantage
BYU is 41-6 at home in the past five years. This season the Cougars will open with five of their first six matches at home, including three straight to start the year. The second home match of that stretch on Friday, Feb. 3 against Cal Poly will kick off BYU tennis alumni weekend, which includes a doubles mixer that afternoon.
After eight straight road or neutral contests in the middle of the schedule, the season concludes with five of the team’s final seven matches being played at home.
Dates and times for each match are subject to change. Any necessary updates—including match changes, streaming options, attendance information and results—will be shared on the team’s website and social media accounts.
