Cougars hold seven shot lead after 18 holes of WCC Championship

BREMERTON, Wash. — With seniors Allysha Mae Mateo and Annick Haczkiewicz tied for the lead, BYU women's golf holds a seven-shot lead over No. 17 Pepperdine after day one of the West Coast Conference Championship at the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain, Thursday. 

Allysha Mae Mateo and Annick Haczkieweicz hold a share of the first-round lead after posting 3-under 69s on the opening day. Riana Mission of San Francisco also shot 3-under to hold a share of the lead on day one. Mateo carded seven birdies and four bogeys in her first 18 holes while Haczkiewicz recorded four birdies and a lone bogey on a rainy day in Washington. 

Lila Galeai sits two shots off the lead at 1-under-par going into the second round. Riverside Classic champion Adeline Anderson sits in a tie for 13th after a 2-over opening day while Kerstin Fotu rounds out the BYU scores with a 3-over 75 on day one. 

The Cougars posted a 5-under 283 on the rain-soaked Olympic Course to take a seven-shot advantage over the No. 17 Waves who turned in a 2-over 290. Gonzaga sits in third after day one at 6-over-par with San Francisco in fourth at 8-over. Santa Clara rounds out the top 5 with a 9-over 297 on day one.

BYU will tee it up in round two of the WCC Championship beginning at 8:20 a.m. PDT with Gonzaga and Pepperdine. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com with updates posted on the women's golf Instagram and Twitter accounts.
