PROVO, Utah — Four BYU swim and dive athletes were honored as 2023 Scholar All-Americans when the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America announced its annual awards on July 7.

Women’s swimmer Brynn Sproul and diver Brooklyn Larson were each recognized as Second Team Scholar All-Americans along with men’s swimmers Emerson Edwards and Tony Puertas.

Sproul boasted a 3.92 GPA while recording season bests of 53.90 in the 100-yard backstroke, 1:56.59 in the 200-yard backstroke and 1:52.90 in the 200-yard freestyle. The senior from Las Vegas, Nevada graduated from BYU in April with a degree in communication disorders.

Larson maintained a 3.79 GPA as a psychology major while totaling three top-10 finishes for the Cougars at the MPSF Championships in February. The sophomore from Chandler, Arizona scored 276.75 to finish third in the MPSF 1-meter finals before going on to represent BYU at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship in Elkhart, Indiana.

Puertas, a global supply chain management major, held a 3.83 GPA and took home silver in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.20 at MPSF’s.

Edwards posted a 3.79 GPA as a pre-business major in 2023. The sophomore from Columbia, South Carolina set six personal bests on the season, two of which came at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship. Edwards finished fourth in the MPSF 200-yard breaststroke competition at 1:58.19 while also ranking as high as 32nd nationally in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:57.88).
