DALLAS — BYU running back LJ Martin was recognized Monday as one of four Freshman Focus honorees by the Football Writers Association of America for week three of the 2023 college football season.
Martin, a 6-2, 205, true freshman from El Paso, Texas, used a combination of power and breakaway speed to lead BYU to a 38-31 road win over Arkansas. Facing a Razorback defense ranked No. 4 in run defense entering Saturday’s game, Martin had 23 carries for 77 yards and two touchdowns.
In addition, Martin had two receptions for 11 yards and his 45-yard touchdown run in the first quarter tied the score at 14-14 after the Cougars trailed early 14-0. Through three games, Martin leads BYU in rushing with 45 attempts and 195 yards. He also has three catches for 16 yards on the year.
BYU will take on Kansas in its inaugural Big 12 match up on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 2:30 p.m. CT from David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence.
