GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — BYU swim and dive won nine combined events in its opening day of competition at the Intermountain Shootout at El Pomar Natatorium on Friday evening.

Regan Geldmacher and Victoria Schreiber finished first and second, respectively, in the women’s 1000 free. Geldmacher dominated the event, clocking a 10:19.60. Schreiber followed at 10:27.28 with Utah’s Claire Dafoe in third at 10:28.11.
Emma Marusakova won the 100 individual medley at 59 seconds flat while Alexia Jackson and Brooklyn Larson finished one-two in 3-meter diving. Jackson totaled a winning score of 271.90 and Larson made the podium at 264.90.
Lily Flint and Julie Bartell each recorded personal bests on Friday and landed on the program’s 50 fly top-10 board. Flint clocked 25.97 to finish fifth in the event and surpass Zerlynn Tiang (2013) for No. 8 all-time at BYU. Bartell took sixth at 26.07 and now stands at ninth in program history.
The Cougars enter Saturday with a 120-85 lead over Air Force along with advantages of 112-93 over Colorado Mesa and 172-29 over CSU Pueblo.
The BYU men won six events behind school record-breaker Jordan Tiffany. The Tennessee transfer won the 50 fly at 21.68, surpassing Andrew Eliason’s record set a season ago. Tiffany also took the top spot in the 50 free (20.70) and contributed to two relay victories.
Emerson Edwards, Brad Prolo, Fletcher Madsen and Tiffany combined to clock 3:18.38 in the 400 medley relay, over a second ahead of Utah’s “A” squad. Tiffany, Luigi Riva, Diego Camacho Salgado and Madsen ended the day with a 200 free relay win at 1:22.17.
Abraham Barragan plowed ahead to win the 1000 free at 9:38.74 with teammate Darwin Anderson in second at 9:44.48. Utah’s Dylan Becker rounded out the top three, finishing at 9:45.19.
Two BYU men’s divers made the podium in the 1-meter. Mickey Strauss finished first with a score of 300.90 while Cody Dreesen took third after scoring 273.10.
Apart from BYU-Utah matchups, the Intermountain Shootout follows a dual meet scoring format. The BYU men finished day one in Grand Junction with a 170-35 lead over Air Force and 125.50-79.50 lead over host Colorado Mesa.
Day two of the Intermountain Shootout begins on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. MDT.
