PROVO, Utah — The No. 7 BYU women’s soccer team defeated Kansas State 2-0 on South Field Monday evening in front of another sold-out crowd for its first Big 12 win at home.

The Cougars racked up a season-high in shots, with 38 total, while also holding K-State to only six. Allie Fryer led the Cougars on offense, with eight shots and one goal. Her goal came in the 76th minute on the Cougars' 30th shot of the game.

"To get that first Big 12 win at home feels so good. I thought we came out well in the first half, but we started to settle for shots outside the box. It's hard to play against a packed in defense. But, I think Ellie Walbruch was a big difference maker in this game tonight. I am proud of how she came in and really just made things happen." -BYU women's soccer head coach Jen Rockwood

First Half

BYU came out aggressive, with Ellie Boren firing off a shot within the first minute of the game. The Cougars would dominate possession during the first fifteen minutes of the match, with Kansas State being held without a shot compared to BYU’s 10.

The Wildcats caught a glimpse of action at the 28-minute mark, with their first shot of the night from Jo Sees off the bench. Erin Bailey took BYU’s 14th shot of the night one minute later, with a save by KSU’s goalkeeper Murphy Sheaff. Sheaff would go on to record 11 saves, a career-high for her.

The game was scoreless at halftime, with BYU at 22 shots and KSU with just two.

Second Half

BYU’s offense was buzzing in the second half, with three shots on goal from Fryer in the first 10 minutes. With 20 minutes of the game left, the score remained 0-0.

The Cougars were finally able to score in the 76th minute when defender Camryn Jorgensen burst up the field with pace, eventually passing the ball off to Brecken Mozingo on the right side of the offensive third. Mozingo crossed the ball into the box, where Fryer was able to direct the ball off of the back heel of her right foot for the highlight-reel goal.

Now with late-game momentum, the Cougars added another goal when Kendell Petersen sent a shot on goal in the 83rd minute that bent into the bottom-right corner of the net, just past the keeper's fingertips. Tara Warner and Mozingo picked up the assists. It was Petersen’s first goal of the season and the second game in a row that Mozingo has had two assists.

BYU’s two goals proved to be enough to hold off a Kansas State comeback, winning the game 2-0.

Up next, the Cougars will face off against Oklahoma State on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. MDT at Neal Patterson Stadium, with live coverage on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
