No. 12 BYU tabs season-high 13 aces in sweep at UCF

ORLANDO — No. 12 BYU women’s volleyball tallied a season-high 13 aces in a sweep at UCF (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) in The Venue on Thursday night.

The Cougars’ (21-5, 10-4 Big 12) 13 service aces is tied for the fourth-most in the rally scoring era at BYU, and tied for the second-most in a three-set match by the Cougars.

Outside hitter Erin Livingston recorded a career-high five aces to go along with a match-high 17 kills on .390 clip as BYU hit .263 as a team on the night. Setter Whitney Bower posted 31 assists and libero Kamaile Hiapo’s 17 digs were tied for a game-high.

Set 1
Three Livingston kills and a service ace paced the Cougars in the early going. On a 3-0 run thanks to a Whitney McEwan-Llarenas ace and Mia Lee kill, BYU forced a UCF timeout ahead 12-7. Livingston then ignited a 6-0 Cougar run that spanned UCF’s second timeout with a kill and two more aces.

BYU went up 20-14 on a double block from Eden Bower and Lee. A McEwan-Llarenas slide kill and Hiapo ace gave the Cougars set point, and Livingston landed down the line to secure the 25-19 opening set win.

Set 2
Trailing by three to start the second, BYU tied the set on two occasions, taking the lead on a Whitney Bower dump kill. Trading points, BYU remained in front, taking a 15-12 lead into the media timeout on Livingston’s fourth ace and a back row kill.

An Eden Bower kill and Hannah Billeter ace made it 19-14, Cougars, and UCF called timeout. Weathering a 3-0 run by the Knights, BYU got a McEwan-Llarenas slide kill and quick hitter for Lee to take a 22-18 lead, forcing the Knights’ second timeout.

After a floating cross-court kill by Lee, UCF reeled off three straight to make it 23-21, and the Cougars called timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Livingston went off the block, and Whitney Bower served the BYU’s ninth ace of the match for a 25-21 set win.

Set 3
The Cougars opened the final frame on a 3-0 run and would lead the entire set, fueled by a 4-0 run and later a 6-2 span that had BYU in front 15-10 at the media timeout.

On another 3-0 run highlighted by Livingston’s fifth ace of the match, the Knights called timeout down 19-12. BYU got another Hiapo ace and kills from both Eden and Whitney Bower down the stretch, with a McEwan-Llarenas kill earning the Cougars’ sweep and 25-18 third set victory.
