BYU Notes (2-0, 0-0 Big 12)

  • Newcomers' Contributions: Whiting, Woolston and Davenport played a combined 180 of 400 total minutes through two games while accounting for 70 of 145 Cougar points (48.3%), 26 of 82 rebounds (31.7%), 14 of 26 assists (53.8%) and 8 of 15 steals (53.3%).
  • Defense + Scoring = Wins — The Cougar defense has held its first two opponents to 54.5 points per game. During the 2022-23 season, Whiting’s squad notched a 14-4 record when holding teams under the 60-point threshold. BYU only scored more than 68 points eight times last season.  The Cougars have done so in each of the first two games, averaging 72.5 points per contest in 2023-24. When scoring 68+ points last season, the Cougars earned a perfect 8-0 record.

  • Sharing the Rock — The Cougars had three or more players finish in double figures in each of the first two games. The win against Montana State was the first time that Whiting’s squad has had four players score 10+ points without Lauren Gustin being one of the four. BYU had three players finish in double-figures against Weber State; Gustin (24), Woolston (16) and Smiler (10).
