Cougars host Weber State in 2023-24 home opener

7,000 elementary school kids will be in attendance at the Marriott Center for the BYU women's basketball home opener as the Cougars take on the Weber State Wildcats at 11 a.m. MT on Friday, Nov. 10.

  • Friday’s morning matinee is the first meeting between the in-state rivals since 2016 when BYU edged Weber State 73-64 to earn a home win. 
  • BYU was the only Big 12 team to open its season on the road, picking up its first road win of the Big 12 era with a 68-60 win over Montana State
  • Newcomers Amari Whiting, Kailey Woolston and Lauren Davenport played a combined 100 of 200 total minutes in the season opener while accounting for 43 of 68 Cougar points (63%), 11 of 43 rebounds (26%), 8 of 10 assists (80%), and 8 of 10 steals (80%). 
  • Last season, BYU garnered an 11-3 record when 3 players scored in double figures compared to a 2-10 mark when less than 3 players finished with 10 or more points. The Cougars had four players finish in double-figures in Bozeman marking the first time that Whiting’s squad has had four players score 10+ points without Lauren Gustin being one of the four.

Weber State (0-1, 0-0 Big Sky) 

  • Kendra Parra was the leading scorer for the Wildcats (13) in their 56-55 loss to the Wolverines on Monday. The 5-9 junior guard was 8-for-9 from the charity stripe after drawing a team-high seven fouls. The transfer from Metropolitan State University of Denver finished with 13 points on 2-of-7 shooting, going 1-for-4 from behind the loop while grabbing five rebounds and an assist.

  • Jadyn Matthews, a 6-0 forward finished with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. The Redding, Calif. native was 1-for-1 from downtown while grabbing eight rebounds. The senior started all 31 games for Weber State a year ago while averaging 34.8 minutes, 13.2 points and 7.6 rebounds while going 79.5 percent from the free-throw line.

  • Matthews has the 17th most points in Weber State history with 1,188. She is currently 240 points away from cracking the top-10 and 464 points from entering the top-5.

  • The Wildcats grabbed 44 rebounds in their season opener, outrebounding Utah Valley by 23 rebounds, 44-21. Weber State had six players with 4+ rebounds, four with 5+ with Daryn Hickok and Matthews grabbing nine and eight, respectively.
