Cougars take on No. 23 TCU in first Big 12 women's hoops matchup

BYU will play in its first conference game as a member of the Big 12 Conference on Saturday as the Cougars take on the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth.

PROVO, Utah — BYU will play in its first conference game as a member of the Big 12 Conference on Saturday as the Cougars take on the No. 23 TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT at the Schollmaier Arena.

The game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ as well as on BYU Radio 107.9 FM, BYU Radio.org and the BYU Radio app with live play-by-play by Jason Shepherd.

Matchup Breakdown

The last meeting between BYU and TCU came in the SDSU Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 23, 2018, as the Cougars earned a 61-58 win at Viejas Arena. The Cougars have won the last two meetings and hold an 11-8 advantage in the all-time series. The Frogs lead the series in Fort Worth as TCU has won 5-of-9 meetings.

BACK TO WINNING WAYS: With the win over Nevada at the Lady Bear Classic last week, the Cougars finished non-conference play 10-3. Their 10 non-conference wins mark just the sixth time in the last 24 seasons that a BYU team has entered conference play with double-digit wins on the season. 

LIGHTING IT UP FROM DEEP: The Cougars have shot 38.9 percent from 3-point land through 13 games with Kailey Woolston and Kaylee Smiler each shooting over 50 percent from behind the arc. BYU’s 38.9 percent mark is good for 11th in the country and 1st in the Big 12.

REBOUNDING QUEEN: Through 13 games, Gustin leads the nation in total rebounds (202), rebounding average (15.5), defensive rebounds per game (10.8) and double-doubles (11). The senior is 90 rebounds away from breaking the all-time BYU rebounding record held by the Gunn. She is also scoring 16.9 points per contest on a 56.2 percent clip.

THREE-POINT MARKSMAN: Kailey Woolston has burst on the scene in her first 11 games, being named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week twice (Nov. 20 & 27). Woolston is 1st in the conference, 6th nationally in 3-point percentage at 50.7 percent, 2nd in the Big 12, 18th nationally in 3-point field goals made (35) and 3rd in the conference, 45th nationally in three-pointers per game (2.69).

DEFENDING THE HOME COURT: TCU is 11-0 at home this season and has won its 11 home games by an average of 28.1 points. In December alone, the Horned Frogs won home contests by an average point differential of 33.8.

DYNAMIC DUO: Madison Conner (22.6), the nation's best 3-point shooter and Sedona Prince (21) are the only duo in the country to average 20 points or more apiece so far this season. Conner and Prince lead the Big 12 in scoring and are ninth and 15th in the country, respectively. 

SHARING THE ROCK: Jaden Owens leads the country in total assists in December with 50. She is averaging an NCAA-leading 10 assists per game over five December outings and finished with double-digit assists in four of her last five games. 

MADISON CONNER: Conner is the leading scorer for the Horned Frogs through 13 games with 22.5 on 42.9 percent shooting, 42.8 from behind the arc while grabbing 6.5 rebounds per contest. She also dishes 3.4 assists per game and records 1.1 steals. The junior leads the nation in made 3-point field goals with 62, 3-pointers per game with 4.8 and holds the NCAA record for most 3-pointers in a 10-game stretch to start a season with 52. 

SEDONA PRINCE: Prince averages a double-double with  21 points and 10.7 rebounds per game through 13 games. The Oregon grad transfer came out of retirement to suit up for the Horned Frogs this season and has recorded 3 blocks per game so far this season. Prince was honored as the Big 12 Player of the Week on Tuesday for the second time this season. She is one of three players to receive the award twice in 2023-24.
