PROVO, Utah — Cierra Tidwell Allphin broke a 34-year-old BYU school record in the high jump clearing 1.89-meters/6-2.5 Saturday afternoon in the Smith Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.
The senior from Mesa, Arizona cleared 1.69m, 1.74m, 1.79m, 1.82m and 1.85m effortlessly before stepping up to attempt 1.89m. On her record-breaking jump, Tidwell-Allphin once again flew over the bar and electrified the Smith Fieldhouse.
"It feels awesome. I feel like I have been going for it for a long time, so I just feel complete," said Tidwell Allphin. "It's been awesome to have our new coach Tiffany Hogan. I feel like my training this year has made me stronger and fitter than ever."
Tidwell-Allphin's clearance at 1.89m/6-2.5 breaks Chris Wilson's previous school record of 1.88m/6-2 jump set in 1989.
"There is still more there for Cierra," said BYU jumps coach Tiffany Hogan. "We are still getting some things ironed out with her approach. As she continues to bring more speed, she will get more height."
A five-time All-American in the event, Tidwell Allphin's clearance currently ranks No. 1 in the country for the 2023-24 indoor season.
