PROVO, Utah — BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe has announced Zack Warren as BYU head men’s tennis coach.

Warren, a former BYU men’s tennis player from 2004-06 and BYU men’s assistant coach from 2009-2012, returns to Provo after working as the associate head coach of Cal’s women’s tennis team for the past nine seasons.

“I am happy to welcome back former Coug men’s tennis player and assistant coach Zach Warren as our new head coach,” Holmoe said. “Zack comes to us from Cal where he played a vital role in the success of Cal’s nationally prominent women’s tennis program. His experience in all aspects of a championship program sold us on his ability to lead our team into highly competitive Big 12 tennis battles. An added plus for Zack is his wife, former BYU great Angela Wagner. We are excited to have both of them back in Provo.”

At Cal, Warren was named regional assistant coach of the year four times. In 2016, he helped lead the Golden Bears to a national indoor championship. That season, Cal held the national No. 1 ranking for 10 consecutive weeks and accumulated a program-best record of 21-2. In 2021 and 2022, the Golden Bears won back-to-back Pac-12 championships. The women’s tennis team won the Cal Newmark Highest GPA Award the past four consecutive years. Warren coached 14 All-Americans in his time at Cal.

At BYU, Warren was named the regional assistant coach of the year in 2011. He helped lead the Cougars to back-to-back conference championships in 2010 and 2011 and BYU’s first appearance in the Top-25 in more than 30 years. Along with playing for the Cougars for two seasons, Warren was also the BYU team manager for one year and a BYU tennis camp instructor. Warren received a bachelor’s degree in communications from BYU, with a business minor. He was a two-time Mountain West all-academic award winner and BYU athletic academic honor roll winner. As a student, he interned as a sports information director with BYU Athletics, working with BYU women’s track.

“I’m thrilled to be heading back to Provo," Warren said. "It is truly one of the most special places in the world. I can’t wait to hit the ground running and usher in a new era of BYU men’s tennis as we enter the Big 12 Conference. This is a talented group of players and it will be an honor to help them surpass their academic and athletic goals. I’m grateful to Tom Holmoe and Brian Santiago for this opportunity to join the BYU Athletics family. BYU holds a special place in our hearts for both my wife and I. Representing BYU has been a lifelong dream of mine. I’m grateful for everything I learned from Amanda Augustus at Cal and for the inspiring student-athletes we were able to coach on a daily basis.”

Originally from Novato, Calif., Warren is married to Angela Warren, a former three-time All-American track athlete at BYU. Zack and Angela have two sons and a daughter.
