Brad Prolo, Tanner Edwards garner Big 12 swimming awards

BYU’s Brad Prolo and Tanner Edwards turned winning performances at the Denver Tri-Meet into recognition in the Big 12’s weekly men’s swimming awards, the conference announced on Wednesday.

IRVING, Texas — BYU’s Brad Prolo and Tanner Edwards turned winning performances at the Denver Tri-Meet into recognition in the Big 12’s weekly men’s swimming awards, the conference announced on Wednesday.  

Prolo was recognized as Big 12 Men’s Co-Swimmer of the Week alongside Danny Berlitz of West Virginia. Edwards garnered Big 12 Men’s Newcomer of the Week. The Cougars have now taken these awards in back-to-back weeks with Luigi Riva and Joseph Pyon doing so on Jan. 10.

Edwards and Prolo’s awards are their first of the season and give the BYU its fifth and sixth different men’s swimmers to be recognized by the Big 12 this season. BYU men’s and women’s swim and dive trails only No. 2/No. 8 Texas with 11 award winners on the year.

Prolo won two individual events for the Cougars at the Denver Tri-Meet at El Pomar Natatorium on Jan. 12-13. The senior from San Clemente, California eclipsed a decade-old pool record in the 200 fly to win at 1:47.05 over Denver’s Dylan Wright. Prolo then finished the day with a winning 53.75 in the 100 breast, sufficient to beat the Pioneers’ Alex Lynch by over a second and break a pool record set in 2006.

Edwards took home BYU’s third individual event win as he clocked 47.27 to finish three-fourths of a second ahead of Wyoming’s Gavin Smith. The freshman from Columbia, South Carolina combined with Prolo, Riva and brother Emerson Edwards to win the 200 medley relay in 1:27.05.

The younger Edwards also fueled BYU wins in the 200 free and 400 medley relays, the latter overtook yet another pool record set in 2014.

Cougar fans can see Prolo, Edwards and the rest of BYU swim and dive in action at the Richards Building Pool versus Air Force and Colorado Mesa beginning Friday at 5 p.m. MST.
