The Cougars are fresh off racking up their opening win of 2024, taking down UC San Diego 5-2 in Zack Warren’s first career win as head coach. At No. 1 doubles, No. 35-ranked Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs won 6-1. Jack Barnett and Redd Owen won their respective battle with a score of 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Barnett, Thayne, Owen and Tygen Goldammer locked up wins. Goldammer’s super tiebreaker victory marked a career first for the freshman. The team triumph at UC San Diego was a bounceback effort after a close 4-3 setback at San Diego State in the Cougars’ first match of the season.
Thus far, Barnett and Owen remain perfect for the Cougars with a 2-0 mark at No. 2 doubles and 2-0 records apiece in singles play. Barnett has been at No. 1 singles, with Owen at the No. 4 slot.
Freshmen Goldammer and TJ Wells are the newcomers to crack the doubles and singles lineup so far in the young season. The duo’s No. 3 doubles match at UC San Diego went unfinished (5-5).
This week will close out four contests in California across a 15-day span.
