PROVO, Utah — BYU looks to get back in the win column as the Cougars travel to Lawrence, Kansas, to take on the Kansas Jayhawks at 6:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday at Allen Fieldhouse.

Wednesday’s game will be the first-ever meeting between BYU and Kansas in women’s basketball. The second meeting this season will take place as the Cougars welcome the Jayhawks to the Marriott Center on Feb. 17 for an afternoon matinee.

BYU Cougars (12-9, 2-6 Big 12 Conference)

“ONE WOMAN WRECKING CREW”: Through 21 games, Gustin leads the nation in total rebounds (324), rebounding average (15.4), defensive rebounds per game (10.3) and double-doubles (19) and is 3rd in offensive rebounds per contest (5.1). Gustin also leads the Cougars in scoring at 15.6 points per contest on 52.5 percent shooting from the field. The senior also leads the Cougars in scoring at 16.0 points per game and minutes played at 36.0. The senior also recorded the first 20-point, 20-rebound game against an AP Top 25 team this season with 25 points and 21 rebounds against No. 4 Kansas State on Saturday. 

BEHIND THE 1ST QUARTER 8-BALL: BYU is 2-8 when trailing after the opening quarter this season. In their first eight Big 12 games, the Cougars have trailed after the first 10 minutes in six of eight contests by an average of 5.0 points, going 0-6 in such games. In their six Big 12 losses, the Cougars have led for a total of 26:29 (3.3 min/game) with three wire-to-wire losses. In two wins, BYU has led for 68:51 (34.5 min/game).

TURNOVER TROUBLE: Coach Whiting has made it clear that ball security is key to the Cougars’ success, however, her squad averages 17.7 turnovers per game so far this season. BYU has turned the ball over more than its opponent in all but two games this season and holds a 22-23 record when posting a negative turnover margin under Whiting. The Cougars turn over the rock 15.9 times per game and have given up 18.3 points off turnovers per game in conference play.

PAY HEED, ALL THAT ENTER...BEWARE THE PHOG: The Jayhawks are an impressive 8-1 at Phog Allen Fieldhouse this season and have won their last three home games. On the season, Kansas averages 72.1 points per game at the Phog, but just 63.4 (-8.7) points on the road. The Jayhawks also shoot 45.7 percent at home compared to 41.9 (-3.8%) away from home; 36.2 percent from deep and 29.7 (-6.5%) on the road.

ONE-ON-ONE OFFENSE: Kansas has made 489 field goals this season, but has only assisted on 213 of them so far. The Jayhawks leader in assists is S’Mya Nichols who averages just 2.8 per game.

STARTING-5 HEAVY: The five starters for the Jayhawks combine for 57.8 of 67.4 (.858) points per game while the bench contributes only 9.6 points per game. The Cougar starters score 57.1 of 68.3 (.836) points per game.

FRESHMAN PHENOM: Freshman guard S’Mya Nichols scored 15 points in the Jayhawks' last game against Oklahoma to notch her eighth-straight game scoring in double figures. She also leads Kansas in scoring at 14.1 points on 46.1 percent shooting from the field. The two-time Big 12 freshman of the week honoree also shoots 36.5 percent from behind the arc, grabs 3.1 rebounds per game and is the leaded in assists at 2.8.
