Gustin notches 27th double-double as BYU falls to Iowa State

AMES, Iowa — Lauren Gustin notched her 22nd-straight double-double in BYU's 74-49 loss to Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum on Saturday night.

The Cougars' shooting struggles continued Saturday as BYU went 19-of-61 from the field for 31.1 percent and 21.7 percent from behind the arc on 5-of-23 from downtown. On the other end of the court, the Cyclones were an efficient 30-of-61 from the floor and 10-for-23 from deep for 49.2 and 43.5 percent, respectively.

Lauren Gustin scored 22 points on 10-of-20 shooting while grabbing 11 rebounds with four coming on the offensive glass to lead BYU. The senior also recorded two assists on the night. Gustin’s double-double is her 27th of the season which leads the country by seven.

Amari Whiting notched her 17th game scoring in double figures as the freshman poured in 16 points on 5-for-14 shooting from the field. Whiting also grabbed four rebounds, dished three assists and snatched two steals in the loss.

Tonight’s shooting performance by BYU marked the fourth-straight game in which the Cougars shot less than 30 percent from distance and the third-straight game under 40 percent from the field. BYU is 0-6 on the year when shooting under 40 percent from the floor.

First Quarter

Iowa State scored the first seven points of the game to take a 7-0 lead early in the first. Kailey Woolston snapped the Cyclone run with a left-corner triple to start the scoring for the Cougars. A spin move and score by Gustin cut the deficit to two at 7-5.

BYU was held scoreless for 2:28 as Iowa State scored on back-to-back possessions to open an 11-6 advantage before Gustin scored off the glass with 4:38 left in the first. ISU finished the quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 20-9 lead headed to the second quarter.

Second Quarter

Emma Calvert scored the first points for the Cougars in the second with a jump hook off the glass. The Cyclones went on a 7-3 run over the next 2:18 to take a 13-point lead with 7:10 left in the half.

After trailing by as many as 14, the Cougar defense blanked the Cyclones over the final 2:06 while going on a 6-0 run to cut the Iowa State halftime lead to eight. Gustin scored back-to-back buckets before Whiting picked the pocket of ISU’s Addy Brown and went the distance to score off the glass. The freshman’s layup trimmed the lead to single digits at 35-27 heading into the half.

Third Quarter

Iowa State stretched its lead back to 14 with 5:54 left in the third before Whiting lobbed to Gustin with an inbounds pass which Gustin finished for her 1,601 point of her BYU career. On the next BYU possession, Smiler hit a top-of-the-key triple to pull within nine.

The Cyclones held the Cougars to just one made field goal during the final 4:54 while going on a 10-4 run to lead 56-41 entering the final ten minutes.

Fourth Quarter

The Cyclones blew the game open in the fourth quarter, going  7-of-13 from the floor while BYU was held to 2-for-14 shooting. Iowa State was also 4-for-8 from behind the arc enroute to an 18-8 fourth-quarter run to earn a 74-49 win over BYU.
