Cougars drop series finale to Cowgirls, 10-2

BYU softball fell to Oklahoma State in the final game of its series on Saturday afternoon.

PROVO, Utah — BYU softball fell to Oklahoma State in the final game of a three-game set on Saturday afternoon at Gail Miller Field, 10-2 in six innings.

Two runs and four hits wasn’t enough for the Cougars (17-12, 2-7 Big 12) to match the Cowgirls’ pair of 10 hits and runs on the day. Oklahoma took the three game series, 2-1.

The Cowgirls plated three in the top of the first inning, propelled by an RBI single followed by a two-run home run over the right center field wall. 

The Cougars got two on base in the bottom half of the frame with no outs, but the Cowgirls squandered the opportunity to tie the game, getting a ground out to second for the third out. 

Hailey Morrow contributed two outs for BYU from behind the plate in the top of the second. The first out was a diving catch for a pop out foul on the left side of the box. The final out came from Morrow to shortstop Ailana Agbayani to catch a Cowgirl stealing second. 

The Cougars got their first run in the bottom of the second from a ground out by Jaelynn Lambert for an RBI. This brought the score to 3-1, Cowgirls.

Oklahoma State brought in another run on a ground out to second in the top of the third to push the Cowgirls ahead 4-1. 

The Cowgirls furthered their lead to 7-1 in the top of the fourth which came off of a two-out bases-clearing double off the base of the center field wall. 

Keila Kamoku landed the Cougars first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth, but the Cowgirls responded with two quick final two outs to end the inning. 

BYU saw the team’s second run in the bottom of the fifth which came off of three-straight singles from Lambert, Agbayani and Maddie Bejarano with no outs.

Oklahoma State brought three more runs in the top of the sixth from an RBI single, sacrifice fly and a ground out. The Cowgirls took the contest 10-2, ending the game via the run rule after six innings.
