Chamberlain Secures 1500-meter Title at Stanford Invitational

BYU sophomore distance runner Riley Chamberlain took first overall in the women's 1500-meters to lead Cougars to strong start at the Stanford Invitational.

STANFORD, Cali. — BYU sophomore distance runner Riley Chamberlain took first overall in the women's 1500-meters to lead Cougars to strong start at the Stanford Invitational.

Women’s Recap

“It was a great day for us to open up the outdoor season,” said associate head coach Diljeet Taylor. “I’m proud of how scrappy the women raced today.” 

Riley Chamberlain finished first overall in the 1500-meter in 4:11.52. Coming just two hundredths of a second behind the meet record, Chamberlain placed at No. 4 on the program all-time lists with a new personal best.

“I’m so happy to be able to line up and keep the good momentum that we got going from the indoor into the outdoor season,” said Chamberlain. 

Jenna Hutchins and Sadie Sargent headlined the Cougars' performance at the 5000m. Hutchins finished in eighth in the final heat with a time of 15:39.40, while Sargent placed tenth in 15:45.87. Sargent moves to No.7 all-time in program records.

 

Men’s Recap

True freshman Carter Cutting saw his 1500m debut on the first day of competition, finishing with a time of 3:44.87 that earned him first in his heat.

“Today was a great opportunity for me to get out there and compete,” said Cutting. “With the rough weather, my goal was just to get the win. I sat right behind the pacer for the first 800m and then traded the lead with the front guys. I felt good closing hard and getting the win.”

Wyatt Haughton, another true freshman, took 11th in the men’s 3000m steeplechase in 8:46.51 winning his heat. James Corrigan finished a fraction of second behind in 8:46.60 to claim second in the heat. 

Joey Nokes placed sixteenth in the first heat of the 10000m with a time of 28:21.75. Heat two featured Mark Boyle 29:32:55 and  Luke Grundvig who finished in 29:3:14. Dalton Mortensen ran 29:58.00 to bring home the final Cougar on day one.

The second day of competition at the Stanford Invitational for the distance groups resumes with the women’s 800m at 2:10 p.m. MT. The Stanford Invitational can be streamed on FloTrack.The sprints/jumpers will conclude competition at the Texas Relays with the women’s high jump set to begin at 10 a.m. MT.
