INDIANAPOLIS — BYU swimmer Jordan Tiffany finished 14th in the 200 individual medley on Thursday at the NCAA Men’s Swim and Dive Championships at IU Natatorium.
Tiffany clocked 1:42.62 in the consolation final to take 14th and score three points for the Cougars. The freshman from Pleasant Grove, Utah entered the meet ranked No. 15 nationally in the event and beat-out Eitan Ben-Shitrit of Michigan and NC State’s Daniel Diehl in the consolation final. Destin Lasco of Cal won the 200 IM title at 1:37.91.
Tiffany’s spot in the consolation final gives him All-America Honorable Mention status, BYU’s first since Payton Sorenson and Jake Taylor in 2016. The day began with Tiffany reaching the consolation final as he clocked 1:42.07 to take 16th of 56 in the 200 IM preliminary race. Tiffany’s 1:42.07 is BYU’s fastest time ever in seven all-time 200 IM entries at nationals.
The five-time Big 12 weekly honoree joins Taylor (2016) and William Shefchik (1998) as the only Cougars to reach as far as the 200 IM national consolation final. Tiffany reached Indianapolis in the 200 IM after a Big 12 Championship third-place finish with a school record 1:41.88.
BYU swimming’s trip to the NCAA Championships kicks into high-gear on Friday with Tiffany (100 fly) and Brad Prolo (100 breast) competing in morning preliminary races for a spot in the evening final. Tiffany, Prolo, Tanner Edwards and Luigi Riva will close the night at IU Natatorium in the 400 medley relay final.
