INDIANAPOLIS — For the second time in two days, BYU swimmer Jordan Tiffany earned Honorable Mention All-America status with a 13th-place finish at 44.90 in the 100 fly.
Tiffany beat-out Djurdje Matic of George Washington, Finn Brooks of Indiana and Michigan’s Tyler Ray in the 100 fly consolation final. Josh Liendo of Florida won the title at 43.07.
Tiffany reached the consolation final with a 44.80 to tie for 10th of 43 in the preliminary race. At 44.80, Tiffany clocked the best 100 fly time at an NCAA Championship and just the first Cougar entry in that event since Jorge Azevedo in 2008. Tiffany’s 13th-place finish is the Cougars’ best since Fred Baird took 12th in 1968. The freshman from Pleasant Grove, Utah is now BYU’s first swimmer to garner two Honorable Mention All-America citations at an NCAA Championships since Jake Taylor in 2016.
Tiffany, Brad Prolo, Tanner Edwards and Luigi Riva combined to go 3:06.82 in the 400 medley relay final. With a 21st-place finish, the Cougar relay squad finished over teams from USC, Georgia, Auburn and Florida. The BYU foursome became the program’s first to reach nationals in the 400 medley relay since Jess Allen, Steve Schroeter, Baird and Tom Fairbanks in 1968.
Prolo also competed in the 100 breast preliminary on Friday. The senior from San Clemente, California finished 36th at 52.85 in his second-straight 100 breast appearance at NCAA Championships.
Tiffany and Prolo will compete in the 100 free and 200 fly, respectively, on Saturday. The Cougars will then close the weekend and the season with the 400 free relay championship final.
