Katoa earns program's No. 7 all-time mark in the hammer throw

LONG BEACH, Calif. Thrower Lia Katoa moved up to No. 7 all-time on the BYU track and field record board in the hammer throw at the Pacific Coast Invitational Thursday.

Women's Recap

Katoa's throw of 56.91-meters/186-8 is over a meter and a half farther than her previous personal best of 55.36m/181-7 achieved last weekend at the Triton Invitational.

"Going into today I was super excited to have a chance to compete in warm weather and try some things I have been doing in practice," said Katoa. "I managed to get one out there and I am super excited about that, but I am not satisfied yet. I feel like I have so much potential this season in the hammer and am excited to keep working."

Cierra Tidwell Allphin won the women's high jump for the 34th time of her career. Her 1.85m/6-0.75 jump also marks her 14th clearance over six feet. 

Gretchen Hoekstre placed seventh overall in the discus throwing 50.24m/164-10 as Katoa earned her second personal best of the day with her toss of 49.49m/162-4. 

Men's Recap

On the men's side, Dallin Shurts placed second overall in the discus with his throw of 62.38m/205 feet, just under a meter off of his personal best of 63.26m/207-6 achieved last weekend at the Triton Invitational in San Diego. 

Danny Bryant placed second in the men's shot put, breaking the 19-meter barrier for the second time of his career throwing 19.10m/62-8.

Freshman Zach Bingham earned a personal best in the men's pole vault clearing 5.16m/16-11 and tying for eighth place overall in the competition. 

The Cougars will return to competition at Long Beach State on Friday and Saturday for the Beach Invitational. Live results can be found here
