Nokes clocks fifth-fastest 5,000-meter time in program history at Bryan Clay Invitational

Azusa, Calif. - BYU’s Joey Nokes clocked the fifth-fastest 5,000-meter time in program history on Friday evening at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. The sophomore was one of 10 Cougars to register a personal best at the distance carnival.

Nokes now owns two of the five fastest 5,000m times in program history as the Riverton native ran 13:28.89 to finish 12th in Heat 1 of the men’s invite section. With his performance tonight, Nokes became the first harrier in program history to run under 13:30 multiple times outdoors. 

In his first 5,000m of the outdoor season, Luke Grundvig ran 13:46.85 to finish eighth in Heat 3. Garrett Stanford also picked up a PR as he finished second in his heat running 14:04.27. 

In the women’s 5,000m, Anastaysia Davis finished third in Heat 3  as the junior ran 16:12.49, exactly 23 seconds faster than her previous personal best set earlier this season at the Stanford Invitational. Julie Sumsion also PR’d, running 16:50.11 to finish 21st in Heat 2. 

Jake Orr had the fastest time by any Cougar in the 800-meters as the freshman ran a personal best time of 1:49.22 to win the open division. Kyle Lund also ran a PR, running 1:50.95 to finish 14th. In the invite section, Carter Cutting ran a personal best time of 1:49.73 to finish 43rd with Joe Lighthall right behind in 60th, 1:50.39. 

Krystie Solomon was the fastest finisher for the Cougars in the women’s invite 800m running 2:07.11 to finish fourth in her heat and 50th overall. Lexi Goff finished 19th in the open section in 2:09.9 while Alona Haymore ran a personal best of 2:12.12 to finish 64th. Elyse Jensen finished 146th running 2:15.59. 

BYU will finish action at the Brian Clay Invitational on Saturday, April 13, beginning with the women’s 1,500-meters at 6 p.m. MT. A live stream broadcast will be available through FloTrack and live results can be found HERE.
