Cougars drop series finale to Sooners, 10-7

BYU dropped game three of its three game series with Oklahoma, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon at Miller Park.

PROVO, Utah — BYU dropped game three of its three game series with Oklahoma, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon at Miller Park.

Five runs through the first two innings and a home run by Easton Jones in the final inning weren’t enough to propel the Cougars to victory as the Sooners used 11 hits to record their 10 runs.

With three doubles and a home run, the Sooners took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

Keoni Painter was the first Cougar on base, doubling to left field in the bottom of the first. With Jones reaching after being hit by a pitch, Collin Reuter brought in both baserunners with a two run RBI double off the center field wall, and BYU came within one, 3-2.

With two runs on two hits and its second home run of the game, Oklahoma extended its lead in the top of the second inning, 5-2.

After a Ryker Schow walk, Luke Anderson doubled off the left field wall to bring home Schow. The true freshman has now scored at least one run in five-straight games. After another walk, Jones singled to right field for an RBI single, bringing home Anderson as the Cougars came within one, 5-4.

Reuter singled to right field, bringing home Painter, for his third RBI of the game. With three runs on three hits, the Cougars tied the ball game 5-5 in the bottom of the second.

After a scoreless inning, Oklahoma plated one run on a hit, two walks and a hit batter in the top of the fourth inning to go up, 6-5.

The Cougars went scoreless in the bottom of the fourth before the Sooners pulled away in the fifth inning.

With three runs, two hits and two walks, the Sooners scored three in the top of the fifth, going up on the Cougars, 9-5.

Cooper Vest doubled off the top of the back left wall to open up the fifth for the Cougars. Vest then scored off a Watkins fly out to right field, bringing the game within three, 9-6.

After back-to-back scoreless innings, the Sooners scored their 10th run of the game on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth, extending their lead, 10-6.

Oklahoma went scoreless in its final frame. In the bottom of the ninth, Jones blasted the ball into the trees for BYU’s first home run of the game, closing the gap 10-7 to end the series with the Sooners.
