AUSTIN, Texas – BYU men’s golf has been selected to compete in the NCAA Austin Regional at The University of Texas Golf Club on May 13-15, the NCAA announced during the Wednesday afternoon selection show on Golf Channel.
"With as many great golf programs as there are, it’s always an accomplishment to get a regional bid," BYU director of golf Todd Miller said. "This team is strong from top to bottom and we feel like but we have only show glimpses of how talented we are. I am grateful that we get another chance to compete and try to qualify for the NCAA Championship."
The Cougars will face off against Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Georgia, Wake Forest, Notre Dame, UNC Greensboro, Utah, San Jose State, Grand Canyon, Arkansas State, and Kansas City.
The Austin Regional is one of six 54-hole regionals that will determine the 30-team field for the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship at Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, California, on May 24-29. BYU has competed in regionals 27 times, with trips to the NCAA National Championship 32 times.
The University of Texas Golf Club is a 7,412-yard, par 71 course northwest of Austin, just 17 miles from Texas's campus.
"It’s great that we get to play two tournaments in a row in the state of Texas. Our guys know what to expect regarding weather and course conditions," Miller continued. "The University of Texas Golf Club is challenging. It’s extremely long and has difficult greens. When you combine that with high winds, it tests every aspect of your game. The length of the course plays to our advantage since we are extremely long off the tee. We also have felt comfortable over the past five years on big courses like this because we play them up in Park City in the fall. Our guys will be ready to compete and play determined golf."
