FORT COLLINS, Colo. — BYU women's basketball is slated to compete in the 19th edition of the Cancún Challenge on Nov. 28-30, tournament officials announced on Thursday.

"We are really excited to take on some talented teams in Mexico this season," said head coach Amber Whiting. "This tournament will provide a great opportunity for our young group to test themselves early in the season and build the chemistry needed to improve our performance in our second run in the Big 12."

The Cancún Challenge will span the Thanksgiving weekend with games being played on Nov. 28-30. The Cougars were selected to compete in the Riviera Division in which each of the six teams will play two games over three days.

The Idaho State Bengals, Iowa Hawkeyes, Rhode Island Rams, Rice Owls and Vermont Catamounts will join BYU in the Riviera Division. The Providence Friars, San Diego State Aztecs, VCU Rams and Wisconsin Badgers will comprise the Mayan Division which will compete in a three-game round-robin format.

“We are pleased to draw another intriguing mix of teams to the Cancun Challenge. These matchups are attention-getters, as we feature a competitive environment that teams love to see before the conference schedule begins,” said Sarah Molina, Cancun Challenge director.

Matchups for the Riviera Division will be announced in the coming months on the Cancún Challenge website
