IRVING, Texas — BYU defensive end Tyler Batty was today named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Football Team for the upcoming 2024 season. The senior from Payson, Utah, was previously named All-Big 12 preseason first team by both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele.
Batty was one of 30 players from the 16-team conference to be selected to the 2024 Preseason All-Big 12 Football Team, chosen by media representatives who cover the league. The team includes 16 players on offense and 14 on defense. See the full list below.
Following the 2023 season, Batty earned All-Big 12 Second Team accolades, while being named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Honorable Mention and Defensive Lineman of the Year Honorable Mention.
Batty led the Cougars for the third year in sacks, picking up 5.5 with nine total tackles for loss. He finished 2023 with 57 total tackles to lead the defensive line and had eight quarterback hurries as the most effective pass rusher on the squad, while also forcing two fumbles and recovering another. He was recognized by the Big 12 and the Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in helping lead BYU to 38-31 win over Arkansas in Fayetteville on Sept. 16.
Off the field, Batty earned a spot on the prestigious 2023 AFCA Allstate Good Works Team, which is awarded to players that excel on the field and are exemplary in their service to the community. He was recognized at halftime of the College Football Playoff at the Sugar Bowl. (read more).
BYU kicks off the 2024 football season against Southern Illinois on Saturday, Aug. 31 at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on Big 12 Now ESPN + with the kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. MDT.
