Men's Cross Country 2024 Season Preview

The BYU men's cross country team announced its 2024 season schedule Friday morning.

PROVO, Utah – The BYU men's cross country team announced its 2024 season schedule Friday morning. 

The Cougars will open the 2024 season on Aug. 31 at the Utah State Alumni Challenge in Logan. The men's 7,000-meter race will begin at 9:40 a.m. MDT on the Steve and Dona Reeder Cross Country Course. 

BYU will host the annual Autumn Classic two weeks later at a new course at the Lakeside Sports Complex in Orem on Sept. 13. The men's four-mile race is set for 9:45 a.m. Admission is free. 

The Cougars schedule will shift to national meets on Sept. 27 with the the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wisc. The men's 8,000-meters will begin at 1 p.m. CDT. 

Switching coasts, BYU will race at the Bill Dellinger Invite on Oct. 11 in Eugene, Ore. at the Pine Ridge Golf Club. The men's 8k race is set to start at 11:15 a.m. PDT. 

Championship races will commence on Nov. 1 with the Big 12 Cross Country Championships held in Waco, Texas at Baylor on the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course. 

The NCAA Mountain Regional will take place in Reno, Nev. at the Washoe County Golf Course.

The NCAA Cross Country Championships will be held at the Thomas Zimmerman Championship Course in Madison, Wisc. on Nov. 23.

Casey Clinger

Entering his final season as a Cougar, Clinger is set to return back to action following a foot injury that sidelined him from competing for BYU for over 14 months. The distance runner from American Fork is a four-time All-American with NCAA Championship finishes of 24th (2017), 13th (2020-21), eighth (2021) and seventh (2022). His most recent accomplishment was placing fifth at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the 10,000-meters with a 27:59.71 finishing time.

James Corrigan

After competing in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games representing Team USA in the 3,000-meter steeplechase this summer, Corrigan will return to Provo to play an active role in the Cougars' 2024 cross country campaign. The sophomore from Los Angeles, Calif. earned All-American status at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Championships, placing 32nd overall. The 2024 outdoor track and field season saw Corrigan specialize in the steeplechase where he won the Big 12 Conference title in the event. He placed ninth at the NCAA championships in June, finished third at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and then ran underneath the Olympic Standard of 8:15.00 days later to qualify for the U.S. Team. Corrigan ran the 8:13.87 becoming the fastest American collegian to run the event.

Creed and Davin Thompson

Twin brothers Creed and Davin Thompson will return to action for the Cougars following injuries that earned both medical redshirts for the indoor/outdoor track and field seasons. 

C. Thompson will enter his final cross country season, coming off third-place finish at the 2023 Big 12 Cross Country Championships. In 2022, he earned All-American status finishing 35th overall at the NCAA Championships finishing in 29:30.5 time.

D. Thompson will see his first time in a BYU uniform since December 2022. At the conclusion of the 2022 cross country season, he earned All-American status placing 30th overall and finishing in 29:28.8 time.

Joey Nokes

Nokes will enter his senior cross country season, having contributed heavily the depth of the Cougars' roster in the 2023 season. He competed in all six meets for BYU last fall, placing in the top-six in three of them. Nokes earned Big 12 Runner of the Week honors after winning the Autumn Classic four-mile in 19:33.1. In the 2024 indoor track season, Nokes took second in the 5k at the Big 12 Championships with a 13:46.39 finishing time. The outdoor season saw him fifth in the 10k at the conference championship, crossing the line in 23:01.9.
