BYU falls to UVU, 2-0

Despite outshooting the Wolverine’s 20-10, the Cougars fell 2-0 in their exhibition match at Clyde Field Wednesday night.

OREM, Utah – Despite outshooting the Wolverine’s 19-10, BYU fell 2-0 in their exhibition match at Clyde Field Wednesday night.

BYU had 19 players see the pitch during the exhibition match, including four true freshmen. 

The crosstown battle proved to be an aggressive match, with 13 BYU fouls and eight UVU fouls. Each team was also issued a yellow card during regulation.

BYU had seven corner kicks to UVU's six.

First Half
The Cougars started the game with a strong offensive presence, firing off four shots within the first three minutes of play. In the 17th minute, UVU had a one-on-one opportunity in the box, saved by BYU goalkeeper Lynette Hernaez

The pace of the game slowed down halfway through the first half. In the 40th minute, freshman Emma Hamberlin beat her defender to cross a ball into the box to Halle Dixon for a one-on-one opportunity with UVU’s goalkeeper, who grabbed the ball for the save.

BYU continued to find chances at the net through the first half, with 11 total shots to the three taken by the Wolverines. The Cougars also added four corner kicks to UVU’s one.

Second Half
UVU’s offense came out fast to start the second half with a quick shot in the first minute, missing high over the crossbar. The Wolverines had another dangerous attack inside the box in the 55th minute, stopped right in front of the goal line by Avery Frischknecht and cleared out.

In the 69th minute, Erin Bailey beat her defender on the goal line and sent a cross to Fryer on the back post, missing high over the crossbar. Bailey had another close opportunity minutes later, megging her defender and taking a shot saved by the UVU keeper.

Freshman midfielder Mika Krommenhoek launched the ball in the 74th minute, forcing the UVU keeper to make a diving save, hitting it over the crossbar for a BYU corner kick.

In the 78th minute, the BYU defense tried to clear the ball, but UVU’s Faith Weber rocketed a shot into the bottom left corner for a Wolverine goal.

Just five minutes later, Krommenhoek fouled in the box for a UVU penalty kick, converted by Marie Quentel for a 2-0 lead. Despite a final push by the Cougars, they were not able to climb back and fell to the Wolverine’s, 2-0.

The Cougars are back on South Field for their final exhibition match against Wyoming on Friday, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the BYUtv app.
