PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s soccer defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils 1-0 on Thursday night in both teams' first Big 12 Conference game of the season. Avery Frischknecht scored her first career goal and the Cougs recorded a season-high 22 shots.

“It was surreaI,” Frischknecht said. “I was just so excited. It was a great ball from Sierra Pennock. I saw it go over the back line and hit it with my stomach, not even my head. So whatever works, as long as we put the ball in the back of the net.”

BYU fired 22 shots in the game, nine of which were on frame. Junior forward Allie Fryer led the shot count with seven.

BYU’s lone goal came from Frischknecht, marking back-to-back games with a BYU center back scoring, with Tara Warner scoring on Arkansas last Saturday.

First Half

Addie Gardner had BYU’s first chance on goal in the 15th minute, but missed her target as the ball went over the goal.

BYU had three shots on goal in the next eight minutes of play from Fryer, Emma Hamberlin and Mattyn Summers.

In the 30th minute, Mika Krommenhoek dribbled up the center of the field to take a shot at the top center of the net, but it was deflected by ASU goalkeeper Pauline Nelles.

The Cougars went to the locker room with a narrow 1-0 lead, outshooting the Sun Devils 12-3 in the first half.
