FORT WORTH, Texas – BYU fell to Big 12 opponent TCU 4-1, giving up two penalty kicks on Thursday evening at the Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium.

Allie Fryer scored her third goal of the season, 22nd of her career in the setback TCU. Freshman Presley Freeman tallied her first collegiate assist on BYU's lone goal of the match.

BYU’s Mia Curry, Savannah Hansen and goalkeeper Kelsey Hoopes played their first collegiate minutes in tonight’s matchup with the Horned Frogs.

The Horned Frogs outshot the Cougars 16-3 and had seven corner kicks to BYU’s two. The match was aggressive with 26 total fouls and two yellow cards assessed to the Cougars. 

Tonight marked the second time this season that the opponent scored four unanswered goals.

First Half
The Cougar offense started the game with a lot of pressure on TCU’s backline, earning two early corner kicks. Although the Cougars held most of the possession in the first 15 minutes, the Horned Frogs were able to hold BYU to no shots. 

In the 19th minute, BYU outside back Freeman took the ball away from a TCU defender and drove up the right side of the field. She passed the ball to Fryer at the top of the 18-yard box, who turned with the ball and shot it into the right upper 90 of the goal, putting the Cougars up 1-0. 

TCU’s first shot of the match came in the following minute, hit right to the hands of BYU goalkeeper Lynette Hernaez for the save.

With a corner kick in the 32nd minute, a TCU forward was fouled in the box and received a penalty kick, converted by Seven Castain for the equalizer. 

In the final 10 minutes of the first half, the Horned Frogs put more pressure on the BYU defense, capitalizing on a cross with a header finding the back of the net in the 43rd minute to put them up 2-1 heading into halftime.

Although the Cougars held most of the possession in the first half, TCU outshot BYU 7-2 in the first half, with two finding the back of the net for the Horned Frogs. As the game got more aggressive, the Cougars were issued two yellow cards.

Second Half
In the 49th minute, the Horned Frogs earned and converted their second penalty kick of the night to extend their lead, 3-1.

TCU kept the pressure, earning a corner kick in the 56th minute, finding the head of Morgan Brown for another goal, giving the Horned Frogs a three-goal lead.

TCU maintained the majority of possession for the remainder of the game, holding the ball on BYU’s defensive half and firing off a few more shots on goal.

The Cougars were unable to capitalize on their offensive opportunities and lost their first Big 12 road match to TCU, 4-1.

The Cougars return to South Field on Monday, Sept. 23 for a rivalry game against Utah at 7 p.m. MT. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
